Best Print Settings for a Block Poster
Most block poster problems happen during printing, not during export. Use Actual Size, avoid Fit to Page, add a little overlap, and print one test sheet before committing to the full poster.
Use Actual Size or 100%
The most important setting is scale. Print the PDF at Actual Size or 100% so every tile keeps the dimensions created by the block poster maker.
If the print dialog uses wording like Scale, Custom Scale, or Size Options, choose 100%. If it offers Actual Size, choose that option.
Do not use Fit to Page
Fit to Page sounds helpful, but it can shrink each tile independently to fit inside printer margins. That small shrink can create visible gaps or alignment drift when you tape pages together.
If your printer cannot print close to the paper edge, use overlap instead of shrinking the whole page.
Use overlap for cleaner assembly
Overlap repeats a small strip of the image on adjacent sheets. When you trim one edge, the repeated area gives you room to align the image before taping.
A small overlap is usually enough for home printing. The goal is not to create a large duplicate band; it is to make trimming and alignment less fragile.
- Use overlap when your printer leaves white margins.
- Trim only one side of each shared edge.
- Tape rows first, then combine the rows.
Check margins before the full print
Printers vary. Some leave wider unprintable margins than others. Before printing every tile, print one sheet and check whether important image content is cut off.
If the test page looks wrong, adjust overlap, margins, or page count before printing the full PDF.

The first page of the PDF acts as a map for the poster. It shows the full image and tile order before the individual printable pages.
Keep this reference page nearby while assembling so page labels such as 1-1, 1-2, and 2-1 match the final layout.
